ST. JOHN'S, N.L. – The UPEI Panthers men’s soccer team is still to be scored on after a season-opening 0-0 draw Saturday with the Memorial Sea-Hawks at King George Field in St. John’s, N.L.
“I was pleased with the performance of the team and considering it’s the first game of our season we will take the point today,” said UPEI head coach Lewis Page.
The Panthers went 4-0 in the pre-season without allowing a goal.
Saturday’s game was a contest where the gusty wind was a factor, blowing north to south. The panthers chose to defend into the wind during the first half and suffered some territorial deficit. UPEI recovered and created a couple chances themselves in the first half.
“It was a game that we felt we should have won,” Page said.
The best chance came in the last five minutes when Sam Smiley set up an unmarked Mon San Aung at the back post only to have his volley sail over the crossbar.
In the second half it was the Panthers game to win, but they were unable to find the back of the net.
The teams play the second half of the two-game weekend set Sunday at 2:45 p.m. Atlantic in St. John’s.
