CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. – The Red Rock 17-and-under women’s team came up short on Sunday during the round of 16 at the Elites of the East volleyball tournament in Fredericton, N.B., losing 15-13 in the third set to the Truro Cougars from Nova Scotia.
The Island squad jumped out to a quick 17-4 lead with strong serving but Truro did the same and tied the game 24-24. The two teams battled with Red Rock taking the first set 26-24.
The Cougars clawed their way to the top in the second set, winning 25-22. The third was a back-and-fourth fight. With the set tied 13-13, a mishit ball by Red Rock and then a well-placed tip by Truro, spelled the end of the weekend for P.E.I. team.
The highlight of the weekend was playing the Moncton Fuzion, who won the tournament. While Red Rock lost 2-0, the second set was close with a 25-21 score. Red Rock also played the Sea Hawks from Newfoundland, losing 2-0 and dropped a 2-1 match against the Sackville Sonics.
Red Rock will continue to train for the next three weeks before playing the 18-and-under Kensington Crusaders and then heading to the Canadian championship in Edmonton in mid-May.
