Panthers lose to Axewomen

CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. – Boosted by a big second quarter the Acadia Axewomen defeated the UPEI Panthers 84-63 Saturday in Atlantic University Sport women’s basketball action.

The Axewomen, the country’s top-ranked team, led 18-16 after the first quarter but outscored the Panthers 29-16 to take a 47-32 advantage to the locker room at halftime. They went to the fourth quarter up 65-52.

All five Acadia starters scored 12 or more points while three had double-doubles.

Katie Ross led the way with 20 points and 10 rebounds while sparkplug Paloma Anderson had 19 and 12 to go with seven assists, two steals and a blocK. Alexandra Berry scored 14 points and hauled in 11 boards.

Jenna Mae Ellsworth led the Panthers with 15 points while Kiera Rigby had 14 and Reese Baxendale 12.

The Panthers did a decent job on the boards, but were outrebounded 47-42. Carolina Del Santo grabbed 15 for the home side.

Acadia improved to 7-0 while UPEI is 2-5 heading into the Christmas break.
