Florida Panthers head coach and Summerside native Gerard (Turk) Gallant will be the guest speaker at the annual Morell Sportsman’s Dinner on Saturday, July 16.

The dinner will also pay tribute to five Eastern Kings Hockey League stars from the 1970s. Jim (Humph) MacAdam, Garry Doyle, Kevin Sampson, Kevin Dingwell and Donnie Dunsford all won many team and individual awards throughout their illustrious careers.

Gallant is one of three finalists for the Jack Adams award as the NHL’s coach of the year after leading the Panthers to a 47-26-9 record in his second season behind Florida’s bench. The Panthers won the Atlantic Division title and set franchise records for wins and points in a season.

Dallas Stars bench boss Lindy Ruff and Washington Capitals head coach Barry Trotz are the other nominees. The award will be presented tonight in Las Vegas.

Northside Communities Initiative committee organizes the Morell Sportsman’s Dinner with a view to replacing the aging Morell Rink. The featured meal is a barbeque chicken dinner provided by chef Ben Charlton of Bishop’s Rest Bed and Breakfast. A live and silent auction will be held during the evening.

Doors open at the Morell High School at 6 p.m. Tickets are $100 per person, and can be purchased from Kipper Doyle by calling at 902-629-0934 or emailing [email protected].
