Sprong, Dobson named QMJHL stars of the week

CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. – For the second consecutive week, Daniel Sprong received the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League’s second star.

The Charlottetown Islanders forward and Pittsburgh Penguins prospect tallied seven points in three games.

He had three assists in the Islanders’ 6-5 overtime loss to the Mooseheads in Halifax on Wednesday. He followed it up with a goal and two assists in Charlottetown’s 6-3 win over Saint John on Friday, before adding an assist in the Islanders’ 5-2 loss to the Acadie-Bathurst Titan on Saturday.

Sprong finished the regular season with 32 goals and 27 assists in 31 games, and his 1.9 points per game was the league’s best.

The Islanders begin their playoff run against the Baie-Comeau Drakkar Friday at 7 p.m. at the Eastlink Centre.

Acadie-Bathurst defenceman and Summerside native Noah Dobson was named the league’s third star of the week after tallying four points in three road games.

The 17-year-old had an assist in a 6-4 loss to Cape Breton on Wednesday, scored twice and posted three points, including the game-winning goal, in an 8-2 victory over the Wildcats in Moncton before going plus-two as the Titan defeated Charlottetown on Saturday.

Dobson ended his rookie campaign with seven goals and 19 assists and a rookie-leading plus-34 rating in 63 games.

Val-d’Or Foreurs goaltender Étienne Montpetit was named the first star of the week.
