Max Morrison scored the series-winning goal with about two minutes left in Wednesday’s game as the Kensington Monahan Farms Wild defeated the Charlottetown Mark’s Work Warehouse Islanders 3-2.
The win gives the Wild the best-of-seven Prince Edward Island major midget hockey championship series 4-2.
Morrison, a Launching resident, said he took a pass from Cole Hackett and beat goalie Daryl MacCallum over the shoulder.
“I was just trying to get it to the net . . . and I guess I got lucky,” Morrison said moments after the game.
“We were throwing everything at the net, doing everything we can to try and get the goal. It’s just nice to catch a break like that.”
Kyle Pinksen had the other assist on the game-winning goal.
Captain Abel Arsenault was the first to hold the championship trophy. After a few photos were taken he lifted the trophy high above his head and skated back to his teammates to celebrate.
“There’s not a better feeling than that for me,” said the 17-year-old Wellington resident, who was playing his third and final year with the team. “That was my dream right there.”
Coach Mark Carragher watched as his players passed the trophy around and shared a moment seven months in the making that they will never forget.
“This is what it’s all about,” he said. “I’m super proud of the guys.”
The victory was special for the Wild in its first season in Kensington. The team moved during the off-season from Cornwall after winning last year’s provincial championship and getting to the Atlantic finals.
“We’re super proud to bring the trophy to Kensington,” Carragher said.
The Wild will represent the province at the Atlantic championship in New Glasgow, N.S., from April 3 to 6.
Sam Jay, who was named the series’ MVP, opened the scoring on the power play at 12:44 of the first period. Pinksen and Campbell Gallant had the assists.
Alex Hambly tied it at 8:11 of the second period with Hunter McIntyre getting the assist. The Wild retook the lead when Parker Ronohan flew down the wing and fired a shot high past MacCallum at 15:54 of the second. Dillon Wall had the lone assist.
Dylan Wheatley scored an unassisted shorthanded goal to tie the game for the Islanders at 7:24 of the third period.
“We weren’t event scared of that,” Arsenault said. “We knew we were going to bounce back.”
Morrison credited Charlottetown for their hard work in pushing them to the end of the sixth game.
“They gave us a run,” he said. “They’re a good team.”
“They gave us a hell of a series,” added Carragher.
Cameron Visser stopped 30 shots for the win while Daryl MacCallum made 29 saves to take the loss in his final major midget hockey game. It was MacCallum’s first game since suffering a concussion on Feb. 8 in Fredericton.
