Huskies score late to end men's hockey Panthers season

HALIFAX, N.S. – Hunter Garlent scored with 32 seconds to go as the Saint Mary’s Huskies eliminated the UPEI Panthers from the Atlantic University Sport men’s hockey playoffs with a 4-3 victory in Halifax.

It was the rookie’s second goal of the game while Stephen Johnson had a goal and an assist. Kyle Pereira also scored while Stephen Shipley had two assists, Anthony Repaci, Bronson Beaton, Connor McGlyn and each added an assist.

Cody Payne, Nelson Armstrong and Marcus Power scored for UPEI with assists to Gabe Guertler, Ryan MacKinnon, Armstrong and Darcy Ashley.

Eric Brassard made 35 saves for the win while Matt Mahalak stopped 28 shots in the loss.

Saint Mary’s led 1-0 after the first period while the game was tied 1-1 heading to the third period.

The host Huskies led 3-1 midway through the final period before Armstrong scored with 7:31 to play and Power tied it with 2:52 remaining.

Saint Mary’s won the best-of-three series 2-1 and will advance to play UNB in the semifinal. Acadia and St. FX will meet in the other final-four matchup.
