CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. – Carson MacKinnon will get a chance to play against a former teammate tonight for the first time in years.

MacKinnon was the captain for Team P.E.I. at the 2015 Canada Games in Prince George, B.C. That squad also included Charlottetown Islanders rookie Thomas Casey.

MacKinnon said Wednesday the two haven’t played against each other since minor hockey. That’ll change tonight when the teams play at 7 p.m. at the Eastlink Centre.

The two are among a handful of 2015 Team P.E.I. players who have played, or are playing, in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. The list includes defencemen Noah Dobson (Acadie-Bathurst), Chris McQuaid (Gatineau) and Jack DesRoches (Charlottetown) and forwards Jeremy McKenna (Moncton), Zach Thususka (Charlottetown), Evan Gallant (Charlottetown) and Kallum Muirhead (Saint John).

“It shows that our Team P.E.I. had quite a bit of talent in that dressing room, so it’s exciting to see my old teammates do so well,” MacKinnon said.

Dobson is getting a lot of positive press from pundits in his NHL draft year, while McKenna has 45 points in 39 games.

“Noah is a very special player,” MacKinnon said. “Jeremy, I never doubted him for a second. He was always one of the hardest workers on and off the ice and now he’s getting all the credit he deserves.”
