CHARLOTTETOWN – Euchred had to work to make the lead, but the front end, yet again, proved to be the place to be in the preferred pace Saturday evening at Red Shores Racetrack and Casino at the Charlottetown Driving Park.
In line to Adam Merner, Euchred had to press hard off the gate in the $2,500 preferred pace at the capital oval from the outside Post 5. The Shadow Play gelding eventually cleared the lead past the 27.3 opening quarter, then continued his dominance through fractions of 57.1 and 1:26.1, before opening up by 4 1/4 lengths to win in 1:55.1.
Cartoon Daddy (driven by Corey MacPherson) had to settle for second best and had his win streak end at three victories. Ashes To Ashes (Gilles Barrieau) finished third.
The mile was the fastest clocking to date in the young season, giving Euchred his third win in the preferred class from four outings since the summer racing meet opened on April 28. Terry Gallant trains Euchred for owner Kayla Habicht Walker of Inverness, N.S.
Mr Irresistible toyed with his opposition in the back-up pace for a $2,100 purse. Jason Hughes was at the lines of the Jennifer Doyle-trainee for a 1:55.4 clocking. Second went to Junebugs Baby (Ken Murphy), with Oh To Be Me (Gary Chappell) finishing third. The winning horse is owned by Danny Birt of Stratford.
