MONCTON, N.B. – The P.E.I. Youth Selects got off to a winning start Wednesday at the Canada Cup in Moncton.

The Island squad used a four-run third inning to defeat Alberta 7-5.

Josh Myers was 1-for-2 with two walks, two RBI and a run while Nathan Jones went 1-for-3 with a double and scored twice.

Duncan Picketts hit a double and drove in a run while Noah Duckworth and Dylan Worth each singled as part of P.E.I.’s five-hit attack. Nolan Ryan and Nic Havenga each had key bunts to help the Island score a pair of runs.

Jack MacKenzie allowed two runs on three hits and a walk in 2 2/3 innings of relief for the victory. He struck out one and walked one. Starter Gabriel Penalver allowed three runs, one of them earned, in 4 1/3 innings. He struck out two and walked three.

Jared Arnold took the loss for Alberta.

Alberta opened the scoring with a run in the top of the first. P.E.I. took the lead in the third and never looked back. The teams each scored twice in the fifth, P.E.I. added another in the sixth and Alberta managed to push two more runs across the in seventh before MacKenzie got Matthew Dobberthein to fly out to first base.

Prince Edward Island plays Manitoba Thursday at 8:30 a.m. and Nova Scotia at 3 p.m.
