MONTAGUE, P.E.I. – It will be a busy weekend at the rink as the Holland College Hurricanes host UNB for two games in a battle for first place in the Eastern Canadian Women’s Hockey League standings.
On Saturday at the Cavendish Farms Wellness Centre in Montague, Holland College and UNB hit the ice at 7:30 p.m. to finish off a day celebrating women’s hockey on P.E.I.
Earlier on Saturday, the UPEI Panthers host the Saint Mary’s Huskies at 3 p.m. before the Kings County Kings host the Western Wind in midget AAA action at 5:20 p.m.
The action continues on Sunday when the Hurricanes host UNB, at 3 p.m., at the Eastlink Centre in Charlottetown.
The ‘Canes enter the weekend at 7-3-0 and in first place in the Atlantic standings while UNB sits at 6-2-0 and just two points behind Holland College with two games in hand.
The season series is tied 2-2, with both teams winning on home ice. The Hurricanes are coming off of two victories last weekend at home against the Acadia Axewomen.
The Hurricanes hold the top three positions in the scoring race. Sam Higgins leads with 12 points (eight goals, four assists), Jess Redmond in second with seven points and Katie Parkman is tied with UNB’s Makayla Oatway and Nathalie Laplantein for third with six points.
The Hurricanes will be in tough this weekend against the league’s goaltending leader Kayleigh Robertson, who has a goals-against average of 1.00 with three shutouts in four games and a 3-1-0 record.
Kate Northrup has also been strong in goal for UNB, as she’s posted a 1.50 GAA on a 3-1-0 record and one shutout.
For Holland College, Mackenzie Koughan has a 1.67 GAA, a 6-1-0 record and two shutouts while Kara Mason is 2-2-0 with a 1.75 GAA.
Admission is free to both Hurricanes games this weekend as a celebration of women’s hockey.
