Brian Affleck is looking forward to competing with some familiar faces today in Summerside.

The 25-year-old York native and New Glasgow, N.S., resident is one of 43 golfers in the field for the Clark’s Toyota Cup. The two-round tournament takes place at the Summerside Golf and Country Club beginning today at 10 a.m.

“I get to come over and play golf and visit family, so you really can’t beat that,” Affleck said.

He looks at playing the Summerside tournament as well as the Stanhope and Island opens annually.

Affleck golfed at Potomac State College of West Virginia University and played parts of three years on developmental tours in Florida and the Carolinas.

The PGA of Canada teaching professional shifted his focus last year to teaching and growing the game.

He started the Brian Affleck Golf Academy at the Eagle’s Chance Golf Centre near New Glasgow, N.S. He had 50 kids last summer, is completing a spring program with 60 youth and has 120 signed up for the summer program.

“It’s encouraging for me and encouraging for others just to get them involved in the game,” Affleck said. “The game is growing over here in Pictou County rapidly right now.”

It means a lot of instructing and little time to play for Affleck, who said he’s only played three rounds this year. He said spending time in Summerside also provides an opportunity to see what general manager Dallas Desjardins is doing to grow the sport.

“I really love what Dallas is doing there in terms of junior golf development,” Affleck said. “I’m trying to do the same Dallas is doing. He’s a good mentor.”

The Clark’s Toyota Cup is the second tournament of the season used to determine the player of the year and exemptions to the Canadian amateur and mid-amateur.
