EDITOR:
I can sympathize with Jim Munves whose wife was in lock up at a nursing home as per your editorial, ‘Confined for life. ‘My situation is somewhat similar except I can sign my wife out, however, she cannot leave on her own, even to take a taxi downtown to shop etc.
My situation came about, when after a brief illness, some of her family members decided that my wife was not taking some of her meditations properly or on time. Well so what? There is no law against not taking pills if that is one’s choice. After all, not many of us expect to live 150 years, so if we skip some meditations, that is our own business.
It seems that putting one into a nursing home only takes a few family members and a willing nursing home manger. Husbands and wives do not matter one iota.
Now getting out is another matter. As long as there is a steady supply of money, the excuses for keeping one in will be many. The fact that my wife had to go from a two-bedroom, two-bathroom apartment to a 435 sq. ft, room that she hates, shows how stupid the system is.
Yes, I hope that Mr. Munves is successful in his court case.
