LETTER: North Korea needs effective sanctions

Published on September 8, 2017

North Korea continues to launch ballistic missiles and detonate an underground hydrogen bomb.

It is not the first time that North Korea has such a provocative action. The government of North Korea threatens to launch missiles capable of carrying a nuclear warhead. The United Nations should publish new effective sanctions on North Korea in order to protect the peace and safety of the world.
As we all know North Korea is struggling economically. However, the government of North Korea has huge expenses on their military every year. Therefore, it is not hard to imagine most people in North Korea do not live a good life.
Most people there today did not experience the Korean War, and they also do not have the fear towards war. In the last century, there were a large number of Korean people killed in the two world wars.
Back in 1945, America launched two atomic bombs, which destroyed Hiroshima and Nagasaki and resulted in tens of thousands of deaths.
It had brought continuous negative influence and heavy shadows to Japan.
It has been over 70 years since nuclear attack happened in Japan. Now the new nuclear weapons that North Korea owns may be more powerful and destructive than 70 years ago.
Some countries have already cut off trade with North Korea, but it is still not enough to stop them. For the world’s peace and our environment, the United Nations must apply effective sanctions to North Korea.
