It has been brought to my attention, that in my last column (The Meddler, Saturday, May 19) I erred in saying that the Liberal, Conservative and Green parties, all with MLAs in the legislature, received government grants to fund their political activities.

This error was based on the fact that such a provision is contained in the Election Expenses Act. I wrongly assumed no party would forgo such easy money. In fact, there have been no grants given under this section of the act since sometime in the 1990s.

However, if the amendments to the act banning political contributions from businesses and unions are passed no one should be surprised if these government grants are re-instated.
