To our provincial government, thank you. As a current university student, I was very happy to see the commitments made in your most recent budget directed at post-secondary supports for Island students.

So, my classmates are aware, a few of the most impressive are as follows: Debt reduction grant increase to $3,500 a year, which could allow for as much as $14,000 of student debt to be forgiven; new investments into the Graduate Mentorship Program, allowing more recent grads to enter the workforce; and a new bursary giving Island students an additional $3,600.

This is on top of the George Coles bursary, which was already a huge help. These commitments show that our government has been listening to Island students and are committed to seeing us succeed. When you have a government that cares about its youth and its students, you have a government that cares about the future.

These announcements in the budget will allow Islanders like myself to succeed now and in the future.

Ethan MacFadyen,
UPEI business student
