EDITOR:
Island residents, you have nothing further to worry about. Since the changes to the Municipalities Act, Richard Brown now has full rights to annex, amalgamate, restructure, etc. all without you even having to go out and vote on it. Think of all the time you will save.
No one’s vote counts anymore, so I guess now we are all equal. Not the democracy I was hoping for. Our condolences to Lower Montague and Valleyfield for the death of democracy in your communities – councils who don’t listen to the people and vote against their wishes. I bet you thought the council you voted for was there to do what is best for the community, to do what the people want.
This premier and all Liberal MLAs have full control of municipal councils and they can even appoint councils to do their bidding. This government has placed itself above the laws of democracy and civil rights. There is no need to attend council meetings, you won’t be heard; no reason to vote, they won’t listen.
They don’t care if the people in the outlying areas have to pay extra taxes to put in a sewage treatment plant for Brudenell – as long as they get what they want, nothing else matters. Common sense and what is right or wrong does not apply to this government.
So, relax, you have plenty of free time to rest up until the provincial election. That is one vote they can’t take away from us – so far.
