EDITOR:

Once again, the RCMP has conducted a long investigation into complaints of wrongdoing by members of our provincial government. Despite the misgivings of the auditor general surrounding the e-gaming file, the government’s blocking of witnesses and the disappearance of $1 million, the RCMP could not find grounds to lay charges.

Small wonder. Asking the RCMP to investigate the activities of the provincial government is like asking them to investigate the fictional activities of the mafia in the thriller movie The Godfather, without the approval of Don Corelone.

The first priority of any new government should be to change the judicial process to empower the attorney general of the province to be an officer of the Legislative Assembly, the same as the Auditor General.

As long any investigative body, including the RCMP, must pussy foot around oversight of the ruling party executive; the political corruption, maligning of public officials and political partisanship, will continue to pervade our political system.

It would better serve the people if the office of the Attorney General, who is the chief law enforcement officer and the guardian of the public interest, is appointed by the Lt.-Governor-in-Council, on the recommendation of the entire legislative assembly, including the opposition. This would allow all members of assembly and the general public, to examine the government’s activities and to hold them to account. It would also allow the opposition members an avenue to pursue questionable partisan activities of consequence.

Wayne Carver,

Long Creek
