EDITOR:
An open letter to Minister Robert Mitchell:
Dear Minister - my wife and I utterly agree with Dr. Colohan's opinion piece in The Guardian of Friday, the 16th. We too have suffered the interminable waits in the E.R with our own problems, and those of various children.
If only someone would come to us from time to time, just to inform us about (for example) a new patient with a much more serious problem, and reassure us that we would see a doctor soon, that would help a lot with the tedium of waiting.
And a source of refreshment (tea, coffee, etc.) nearer than the main lobby of the hospital, would help too.
It seems to us that the smooth running of the E.R. is primarily a management issue. More money, per se, will not necessarily solve the problem - what is needed is efficient use of existing staff.
Please consider this - you or a member of your family may be the next person waiting.
