Poll finds half of P.E.I. residents support change in electoral system

A new poll from MQO Research shows half of Islanders support a change to a mixed member proportional system.

The poll conducted by phone from April 16 to May 8 asked “if a referendum were held today would you vote in favour of a new mixed member proportional (MMP) system?”

It found 50 per cent of Islanders would vote for change while 31 per cent would choose no.

A further 19 per cent were undecided.

Among political party supporters, 74 per cent who favour the Greens said they would vote for change, which was the highest level of support among all the parties.

For NDP supporters, 64 per cent said they were in favour of change, while 54 per cent of PC supporters would vote for mixed member proportional.

Liberal supporters were least likely to be in favour of change with 45 per cent choosing no while 40 per cent said yes.

When it comes to those with no party preference, 50 per cent supported change while 25 per cent were undecided.

The poll included 401 randomly selected eligible voters from across P.E.I. and the margin of error for the total sample is plus or minus 4.9 percentage points 19 times out of 20.
