P.E.I. Liberals, premier maintain lead in latest MQO poll

Support for the Prince Edward Island Liberal government edged up four per cent, while the Green party dropped nine per cent, according to MQO Research’s October poll.

Liberal support increased to 43 per cent in the quarterly poll and ratings for the leadership of Premier Wade MacLauchlan saw a small increase in mean score from 4.9 in July to 5.3 in October.

Progressive Conservative support held steady at 32 per cent, while the NDP increased five percentage points to 12 per cent.

The Greens sit at 13 per cent support with their slide following significant jumps throughout 2017.

The undecided/no vote group also increased slightly to 36 per cent, up from 32 per cent the previous quarter.

Fifty-eight per cent of Islanders felt the economic outlook for the province is about the same as last quarter, while 22 per cent felt things were getting better and 16 per cent thought the economy was getting worse.

MQO spoke with 400 randomly selected Island residents for the poll, which was conducted by telephone from Oct. 3 to Oct. 10.

Federally, the Liberals continue to hold a strong lead but did experience a drop in support this quarter.

Among decided and leaning voters, Liberal support dropped seven percentage points to 60 per cent; Conservative support held relatively steady at 25 per cent; NDP support edged up five percentage points to 11 per cent; and support for the Green party remained unchanged at five per cent.

Ratings of government performance under Justin Trudeau held steady compared to April with a mean score of 5.7.

The margin of error for the total sample is plus or minus 4.9 percentage points, 19 times out of 20. Among decided and leaning voters, the margin of error for the survey is plus or minus 6.1 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.
