A man who for about four years avoided charges related to ignoring no-contact orders was given a suspended sentence Monday and fined $250.

Charles Boshuis, 28, appeared before Judge John Douglas in provincial court in Charlottetown for sentencing after previously pleading guilty to three charges.

Those charges involved breaching a recognizance, breaching his probation and failing to attend court.

The court heard Boshuis was on two court orders not to have any contact with a woman in 2013 but was found in her apartment.

When the police went to her apartment the woman invited them in.

The police found Boshuis in a closet where he was trying to hold the door closed.

Boshuis missed two court dates, left the province with the woman and was gone for several years.

Defence lawyer Thane MacEachern said Boshuis was trying to get a fresh start and didn’t leave to avoid charges.

Boshuis hasn’t been before the court in three years and has his addiction under control, MacEachern said.

Douglas said the sentence wasn’t a reward for leaving the province but rather recognition for turning his life around.

Along with the fines, Boshuis will be on probation for six months and must pay $180 in victim surcharges.
