Fire and police investigators spent Monday at the scene of a house fire in Stratford.

The report came into 911 at 6 a.m. from neighbours of a bungalow home at 5 Hillview Dr.

Firefighters found the home filled with smoke but found it difficult initially to locate flames.

"We encountered the house full of smoke and a bit of fire in the kitchen area," said Crossroads Fire Chief Ron Young later as firefighters were leaving the scene.

The home had just within the past week been left unoccupied by owners Harold and Tammy Lutz, who left the Island, said neighbour Cathy MacDonald.

The couple had been looking after two grandchildren at the home for a number of years. The grown children of the family had been moving things out of the home over the past week, said MacDonald.

Toys and play equipment were all over the yard.

RCMP office Cpl. Dan D'Amour, team leader responsible for the Stratford detachment, said the fire remains under careful investigation, hinting that officials want a very clear answer on what might have caused the fire.
