Trudeau gives local Liberal campaign a boost

SUMMERSIDE – Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau and P.E.I. Premier Wade MacLauchlan both denounced negative political messaging and promoted their respective brands of positivity as they each laid out their election pitches to Prince Edward Island voters Thursday.

Trudeau attended a P.E.I. Liberal rally in Summerside Thursday evening as P.E.I.’s provincial election nears the mid point of the campaign.

Both Trudeau and MacLauchlan used their stump speeches to highlight the attack advertising and tactics employed by both the provincial Progressive Conservatives and the federal Conservative party.

Trudeau said he believes this kind of negative messaging breeds cynicism and spoke of his ardent belief in a more positive approach to governing.

“People have figured out that attacks and negativity, those wedge issues and the divisive approaches can help get you elected, they can even give you a majority if you’re Stephen Harper,” Trudeau said.

“But if you get elected through the politics of negativity, you find it a lot more difficult to govern the whole of the country for the good of everyone, and that’s what we’re fighting against.”

MacLauchlan reiterated his censure of the PC party’s use of attack ads as part of its campaign strategy. Earlier this week he called the ads a form of ‘bullying’ and called for them to stop.

During his speech Thursday, MacLauchlan called them ‘Harper-style attack ads.’ “Justin Trudeau’s support in Atlantic Canada is compelling evidence that negative style ads are not effective in our region,” MacLauchlan said, referencing a recent Corporate Research Associates poll that measured the Liberal party’s support at 56 per cent across the region.

“Perhaps if the people behind those ads were to spend some more time here, in a region where we know our neighbours and call them friends... they would understand why Islanders are reacting negatively to the negativity.”

MacLauchlan outlined his campaign promises to date, focusing on the provincial election he is currently trying to win. Trudeau concentrated his speech mainly on federal issues, asking the over 1,500 supporters in attendance to elect Liberals in the upcoming the federal election, scheduled for later this fall.

“On May 4th you all have an important decision to return with an incredibly strong mandate my friend, Wade MacLauchlan, and this great team,” Trudeau said.

“And I’ve got another request for you – if you make sure my friends, Bobby (Morrissey), Sean (Casey), Lawrence (MacAulay) and Wayne (Easter) get sent to Ottawa with a strong mandate... you will give Canada the better government it deserves.”

This double-barrel election pitch seemed not to have dampened the elation of Trudeau’s fans. After his speech, Trudeau was swarmed by a mass of people trying to shake his hand or take a photo with him. One supporter even handed him their newborn baby to kiss. “Trudeau is a great speaker, he’s inspiring.

He makes you want to participate in politics,” said Brooks Roche from Vernon River-Stratford. Adam Lyle Sumerside-St. Eleanors agreed. “This was my first Liberal rally and it had such an exciting atmosphere for sure.”

Trudeau will tour western P.E.I. Friday, including a visit to the Mill River Sugar Shack and a tour of Vector Aerospace.
