CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. - MLAs won’t be allowed to ask cabinet ministers during question period about things they did before joining cabinet, Speaker Buck Watts ruled Tuesday.

Last week three MLAs rose on points of order or privilege, which Watts took under consideration.

That included questions to several ministers about past public accounts meetings they attended before joining cabinet.

Watts said if ministers aren’t to be asked about previous portfolios then they shouldn’t be questioned about their time prior to joining cabinet.

“I trust members will refrain from posing such questions in the future,” he said.

In response to another matter, Watts said he found no basis for Georgetown-St. Peters MLA Steven Myers’s point of order regarding comments Justice Minister Jordan Brown made about an ongoing lawsuit related to the province’s failed e-gaming scheme.

Watts also ruled independent MLA Bush Dumville asking about meetings Liberal members attended before public accounts meetings were not a matter of privilege.
