Sentence has been adjourned until next week in the case of a 21-year-old Charlottetown man who molested a 12-year-old girl after breaking into her home.

Travis Mehmoodi entered the child’s bedroom, slid his hand down her underwear and touched her vagina. There was no penetration.

He told the child he wanted to have sex with her using language that left no doubt as to what his intentions were.

But while he hinted at sexual intercourse it did not happen.

To keep the child quiet Mehmoodi told her he had a big knife in his pocket.

After leaving the victim’s room he peeked in on her younger sister but did not enter the room.

He then left the residence, taking with him a 32-inch television, a tablet computer and a videogame system.

The victim’s parents were awakened by their daughter’s crying when he left.

The television was never recovered and the tablet computer was broken beyond repair.

Mehmoodi, who also tried to break into a second residence, was apprehended by police a short time later.

He initially denied being involved and told police they would not find his fingerprints. But he was wrong. Police found his fingerprints at the victim’s residence.

He entered guilty pleas to charges of sexual interference and break, enter and theft.

Other charges were stayed.

In court Friday the mother of the victim took the stand to read her victim impact statement.

She said she no longer feels safe in her own home, that she’s anxious and consumed by grief.

She told Chief Provincial Court Judge John Douglas that there is an overwhelming sense of violation and that she now has trust issues.

The victim also prepared a statement describing the impact on her young life.

Some days she is consumed with fear, some days she is very angry.

She has dropped out of a number of activities she used to enjoy and does not spend as much time with friends as she used to.

The victim also has moments where she wonders what she could have done to get the attention of her parents that night.

Mehmoodi’s prior criminal record included convictions for assault, mischief, theft, failure to attend court and failure to comply with court orders.

In addition to whatever sentence Douglas imposes the Crown will be asking for a DNA sample for the national DNA databank, a weapons prohibition and Mehmoodi’s registration on the national sex offender registry.
