A Nova Scotia man is in custody after allegedly hitting a woman, breaking into a home and a business, and walking down the middle of the TransCanada Highway in Cornwall on the weekend. All while under the influence of drugs and alcohol, say RCMP.

A 911 caller at about 1:30 a.m. Sunday reported a man was walking in the middle of the highway in Cornwall.

Queens District RCMP officers arrived at the scene, where they report finding a severely intoxicated man who appeared to be under the influence of some mind-altering substances, as well as alcohol.

The investigation revealed that a Good Samaritan, who did not know the man, tried to assist and convince him to get off the highway to safety. The man allegedly assaulted and threatened her.

He then ran to a nearby residence where he kicked in a door and entered, say police.

The occupants were startled, but not injured.

The man next ran to a nearby business, the Sunny King Motel where he punched a window, breaking it.

"These incidents all occurred in a few minutes after the initial 911 call," said the police report.

Queens District RCMP officers arrested a 43-year-old man from Lunenburg, N.S., without incident. He was examined at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and later put in jail.

He will appear in provincial court to face charges of assault, two counts of uttering threats, two counts of damage to property and break and enter. Other charges may result as the investigation is still ongoing.

Queens District RCMP say they appreciate public support in curtailing criminal activity but they do not want members of the public putting themselves at risk in an effort to help. "While it seems the right thing to do, criminals can be extremely unpredictable and dangerous so it’s best to call 911 and let officers intervene,” they say.
