Stories about the Confederation Bridge and the Irving Whale oil tanker that sank off Prince Edward Island’s shores are among the front-page articles up for national awards in an online contest.
The Guardian front pages celebrating the tenth anniversary of the fixed link and the sinking of the oil barge are two of 10 pages in the science and technology category for the contest, called History of Canada in the Nation’s Front Page. Other contenders are the Calgary Herald’s item called “100 years of oil” and the Globe and Mail’s article, “Hacked”. The contest, an initiative by P.E.I. 2014 and Newspapers Canada, is a one-time national competition that will celebrate and award newspaper stories that have made front page news.
"The 2014 celebrations in Prince Edward Island and across Canada will recognize an important milestone in Canadian history, as Canadians mark the 150th anniversary of the 1864 Charlottetown Conference, which paved the way to Canadian Confederation," say contest organizers. "This celebration has sparked the collaboration of Newspapers Canada and P.E.I. 2014 to offer The History of Canada in the Nation’s Front Pages."
The science and technology category is one of the first in a series of categories representing a range of subject matter that has been developed with the intent of building a collection of stories about significant and uniquely Canadian events, issues and people.
Newspapers from across Canada submitted their top front pages, Newspaper Canada judges narrowed down the selections and now it’s up to readers to select the winner.
Until July 11, readers can select their favourite front-page stories from the Canadian sports and Canadian science and technology categories. Islanders should note Summerside’s Journal Pioneer has an entry in the sports category.
Every two weeks FrontPages.ca will be introducing two new categories, so readers are encouraged to come back and check out what’s new.
