The Prince Edward Island Potato Board is working with Cavendish Farms and the P.E.I. Department of Agriculture to grow potato yields and markets while also improving the environmental sustainability of the industry.

Three working groups are tackling the areas of soil health, seed management and science and technology under an Enhanced Agronomy Initiative.

Project lead for the program is Ryan Barrett, who works as a research co-ordinator for the Prince Edward Island Potato Board.

Board general manager Greg Donald, said, “This initiative is focused on listening to growers and working with them to enhance the productivity and profitability of their farms. We plan to access the latest information in agricultural research and technology and to find new and better ways to provide this information to our growers. Through collaboration, we feel that there is significant potential for improvement.”

As well as the three funding partners, the Enhanced Agronomy Initiative will work with representatives from Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada and the Dalhousie Faculty of Agriculture.

The initiative began work in early May. Some research and extension projects are already underway, while others will be developed later this year.
