CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. - For the first time in more than a decade a P.E.I. government has tabled a balanced budget.

Highlights of the 2017-2018 budget:

-          Balanced budget with surplus of $600,000 forecast

-          More than $1.8 billion in spending

-          Basic personal income tax exemption increasing by two per cent

-          More than $1.1 million added to municipal grants

-          Health P.E.I. budget increasing 5.8 per cent to $640 million

-          Provincial revenues forecast to increase by almost $80 million

-          Increase of more than $5 million in education spending

-          Family and Human Services budget increasing by $6.6 million

-          Government to spend $600,000 on a universal influenza immunization program

-          Net debt projected to increase to $2.19 billion

-          Increase of $600,000 in spending on educational assistants

-          Early-years autism grants increasing by $100,000

-          Funding to UPEI, Holland College and College de L’Ile increasing by one per cent

-          Contributing $2 million to new Angel/Seed Investment Fund being established by Island Capital Partners

-          Allocating almost $600,000 to improving records information processes across government

-          Establishing four economic advisory councils across the province
