The Murphy’s Community Centre recent renovations, including updates to the gym, bowling centre and child-care spaces, got significant help from the federal government.

The Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency announced Friday that its Innovative Community Fund invested $522,639 in the project.

Built in 1963, and operated for many years by St. Dunstan’s Parish, the facility in downtown Charlottetown is a not-for-profit public gathering space, providing recreational programming to the general public.

"The community centre provides great space and opportunities for groups such as seniors, children and other not-for-profit organizations," said the centre's general manager, Greg MacDougall.

"The costs associated with maintaining and upgrading a facility as large as this are huge. The support from ACOA, coupled with loan guarantees from Murphy's Pharmacies, has allowed for upgrades to aging bowling equipment and community meeting space that will be a benefit for decades to come."

Charlottetown MP Sean Casey noted Murphy’s Community Centre is a vital piece of social infrastructure for residents of Charlottetown and surrounding areas.

"The wide-reaching benefits of its programs are integral to the well-being of Islanders, and I applaud the dedication of the Murphy family and their team to maintaining this valuable space.”

With over 40 programs, the centre offers educational and social opportunities to everyone from children to seniors, people with disabilities, newcomers and minority groups.
