MONTAGUE - The provincial champions of soccer won’t be getting an extra donation from eastern P.E.I.’s largest town.

The Eastern Eagles U14 soccer club requested some financial assistance to bolster a travel fund of $25,000 required to send the team to the nationals in Newfoundland, which take place this week.

“We have a policy that has put an end to providing donations for individual teams of any sort,’’ said Coun. Debbie Johnston. “So I suggest we follow it.”

The team has been bagging groceries and holding car washes in an effort to raise funds and even held a voluntary road toll to ensure travel costs could be covered.

However, it has yet to return a grant application to receive funds already budgeted by the town.

The Eastern Eagles club was allotted $1,000 in the 2015 town budget.

“The application did not materialize because the club could not meet all the requirements of the grants policy,’’ said town chief administrate officer Andy Daggett. “The money is in the budget, and while it could become part of the solution for covering several (other) unbudgeted expenses council has approved, some or all could go to the soccer team.”

Apparently one of the requirements for the grant is that the team must be financially supported by the local community.

The Eastern Eagles soccer club is located in Lower Montague.

Daggett also advised council the U16 boys teams are raising funds as well for a similar trip to B.C.

“The Eastern Eagles gets $1,000 from the town in the budget,’’ said Coun. Jim Bagnall. “We decided to stop donations for individual teams and that should be it.”
