The provincial fire marshal’s office still hasn’t determined a cause for the blaze that destroyed the Montague Town Hall last week.

A spokeswoman with the department said Tuesday the matter remains under investigation.

The Montague Fire Department received the call at 4:35 a.m. on Aug. 2 and had firefighters on the scene minutes later. The roof of the building was fully engulfed when they arrived.

Firefighters were able to save various documents, computers and historic pictures but Jock Beck, the deputy fire chief, said the building will have to be demolished.

Beck added that it was the biggest fire his department had fought in the past eight years.
