It seems the top politicians in the province will determine the future of the old Prince Edward Home property in Charlottetown.

Questions about this prime parcel of real estate were raised in the P.E.I. legislature by Charlottetown MLA Jordan Brown Wednesday.

He noted its proximity to Victoria park, the city’s crown jewel of green space, and inquired about the plans for the future of this vacant building.

“It’s rapidly deteriorating, and is becoming and eyesore and a hazard,” Brown said.

Transportation Minister Paula Biggar says cabinet will decide the fate of this building and the property it lies on.

“It’s an important area of concern,” she said.

“The department will itself be seeking direction from the executive council on the best way to proceed with this to ensure that we have the best outcome for the property and that whatever we do in the future with that property, it will be used in the best way to benefit the public.”

Characterizing this parcel of land as “one of the hallmark spaces in Charlottetown,” Brown asked whether any third parties have shown an interest in the old Prince Edward Home or whether the property has yet been designated for a specific purpose.

He also wanted government to commit to tearing down the dilapidated former manor.

No decisions on what it will be used for or who will control this property will be made until consultations have first happened with any interested parties, Biggar said.

The city of Charlottetown will be part of those discussions, she added, reiterating the final decision will be made by executive council.

“We’ll endeavour to work quickly to have an acceptable plan for this property.”
