A 69-year-old Charlottetown man with dementia was given community service and probation last week after stealing razor blades from a grocery store.

Francis Eugene Trainor appeared before Judge John Douglas in provincial court in Charlottetown where he pleaded guilty to the theft.

The court heard that on Oct. 18 Trainor took the razor blades from a Superstore in Charlottetown before staff stopped him and recovered the stolen items.

Defence lawyer Thane MacEachern told the court Trainor said he didn’t know why he stole the razor blades.

MacEachern also said Trainor had a form of dementia, but understood what he did was wrong.

Trainor will be on probation for six months and must perform eight hours of community service.

He must also pay a $100 victim surcharge.
