A Lennox Island man has been sentenced for a violent sexual assault that happened in that community on Canada Day 2015.

Tyler James Bernard, 25, was sentenced April 12 to serve two and a half years in jail for his crime, though he received credit for the six months he’s already spent in jail since his arrest.

Once he’s released, Bernard also has to serve three years of probation and must pay a $200 victim surcharge. He also has to submit a DNA sample and will be on the National Sex Offender Registry for life.

According to the Crown’s facts of the case, Bernard arrived at his victim’s residence on Lennox Island at about 10 p.m., July 1, 2015, and requested that she return with him to his residence in the community.

The two set out walking, but as they were passing through a wooded area Bernard suddenly knocked his companion to the ground and sexually assaulted her.

She pleaded with him to stop, which he did, and left.

The victim made her way out of the woods and to a relative’s home shortly after. They called 911 and the victim was taken to Prince County Hospital, where she provided a statements to police.

A sexual assault kit performed on the victim latter returned a match for Bernard.
