The public, organizations and faith communities are invited to the forum organized by the Cooper Institute at the Farm Centre on University Avenue in Charlottetown from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
“Rights, Faith, and Policy: A Public Forum on Migrant Worker Issues” is part of a growing movement to shed light on the ways Canadian laws constrain migrant workers’ rights and to build protections and supports.
The keynote speaker for this event is Fay Faraday, a social justice lawyer from Toronto who has published work on the law and migrant worker rights.
Organizers hope the event will help strengthen local supports for migrant workers and give more attention to the provincial campaign to ban exploitative recruitment fees often placed on them.
“We hope to bring together people from many different backgrounds to talk about the issues facing migrant workers here on P.E.I.,” said Josie Baker of Cooper Institute.
“This forum is an excellent opportunity for Islanders and policy makers to learn more about the effects of the Temporary Foreign Worker Program, and identify actions and steps forward that will support migrant workers.”
