Islanders asked to comment on first draft of P.E.I. Water Act

CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — The provincial government is inviting Islanders to comment on the first draft of its proposed Water Act.

The draft of the act, aimed at protecting P.E.I.’s water resources and the ecosystems that support them, was released was Thursday.

It was created after a first round of public consultation, which will be followed by a second round beginning March 30. 

The draft act is composed of existing and new legislation and includes purpose and goals, a new program to monitor the quantity and quality of water resources and a new public registry for all water-related approvals.

It is broken down into several key sections:

 

• protection of water

• water management areas

• water withdrawals and wastewater discharges

• water supply of water and wastewater disposal systems

• offences and penalties

• regulation 

 

Public feedback can be provided online or at public consultation sessions across the Island. Those interested in making a presentation are asked to pre-register by calling 902-368-5028.

The draft of the act is available at princeedwardisland.ca/wateract.

 

Public consultations will be at 7 p.m on the following dates:

• Thursday, March 30 at Kaylee Hall, Pooles Corner

• Monday, April 3 at Westisle Composite High School, Elmsdale

• Wednesday, April 5 at Credit Union Place, Summerside

• Monday, April 10 at Murphy’s Community Centre, Charlottetown
