The draft of the act, aimed at protecting P.E.I.’s water resources and the ecosystems that support them, was released was Thursday.
It was created after a first round of public consultation, which will be followed by a second round beginning March 30.
The draft act is composed of existing and new legislation and includes purpose and goals, a new program to monitor the quantity and quality of water resources and a new public registry for all water-related approvals.
It is broken down into several key sections:
• protection of water
• water management areas
• water withdrawals and wastewater discharges
• water supply of water and wastewater disposal systems
• offences and penalties
• regulation
Public feedback can be provided online or at public consultation sessions across the Island. Those interested in making a presentation are asked to pre-register by calling 902-368-5028.
