Police had difficulty waking up a Charlottetown man impaired by drugs who was asleep at the wheel.

James Robert MacNevin, 52, pleaded guilty Thursday to operating a vehicle on July 24 while impaired by drugs. Police came across MacNevin, fast asleep in the driver’s seat of his car on Allen Street in Charlottetown, with the keys in the ignition.

A toxicology test found traces of numerous drugs in MacNevin’s system, including speed and the often-lethal opioid Fentanyl.

Provincial Court Judge John Douglas sentenced MacNevin to one day in jail, fined him $1,000 and ordered him to pay a $300 victim surcharge.

MacNevin is also prohibited from operating a motor vehicle for one year.
