HomeSense hadn’t even opened its doors in Charlottetown on Tuesday morning before the lineup to get in stretched around the building.

And there was still a noticeable buzz in the air a few hours later.

HomeSense offers shoppers a destination for brand name and designer home décor from around the world.

Mary Nicholson of Montague told The Guardian that she spent two hours just browsing around.

“It’s home décor!,’’ Nicholson said when this reporter seemed surprised at the time factor. “They have some unique items in there. Where else can you find a Buddha for the bathroom?’’

Jacqueline Kinnear of Georgetown said she had the grand opening of the store circled on her calendar.

“We couldn’t wait for this HomeSense to open,’’ said Kinnear, proudly displaying a thermos with a horse picture on it that she had purchased.

Nicholson said she has shopped before at HomeSense in Moncton and is happy to have the option now of being able to buy her home décor goods in Charlottetown.

Both women said only the addition of a Costco would make the shopping experience in Charlottetown better.

To no one’s surprise, there were far more women in the store than men.

“I’m here because my wife is here,’’ said one man who declined to give his name. “She’ll have to return the favour when Princess Auto opens up.’’

Princess Auto is a Canadian retail chain specializing in farm, industrial, garage and surplus items. It will open in Charlottetown by late winter or early spring near the retail plaza on Spencer Drive.

Another male shopper joked that putting Princess Auto next to HomeSense “would be a licence to print money’’.

Some women felt the prices were a bit on the expensive side, saying they could buy the same product at HomeSense in Moncton for at least $20 less.

But that sentiment seemed to be the minority opinion, at least from the people The Guardian spoke with.

“I’ve been salivating over about this day for months,’’ said one Charlottetown resident, who added that she was thrilled with the selection of goods.

Another husband tagging along with his wife added, with a chuckle, “when she’s happy, I’m happy and, right now, she’s happy’’.
