Two P.E.I. businesses that serve food received warning letters from health inspectors recently for a variety of violations.

The Galley Store in Malpeque and the canteen at Rodd Brudenell Dundarave both received warning letters.

The Galley Store, a convenience store, was issued a warning letter after inspectors noticed the handwashing station did not have hot water and was not set up with liquid soap and paper towels in dispensers.

Inspectors also noted the sanitizer for work surfaces was not immediately available and it didn’t have any testing equipment to ensure that the sanitizer would be at proper strength when it was mixed.

Inspectors first noted the problems during a routine inspection on Aug. 5.

The same problems were flagged during a followup inspection on Aug. 28 and that’s when inspectors issued a warning letter.

Ryan Neale, senior environmental health officer with the Department of Health and Wellness, said the Galley Store has since closed for the season but inspectors will be following up to ensure corrective action is taken before the 2016 season.

As for the canteen at Rodd Brudenell, two violations were noted by health inspects during a routine inspection Aug. 27.

The canteen didn’t have a sanitizing step in its manual dishwashing procedure, which requires employees to wash, rinse and sanitize.

Inspectors also noted that food handlers on duty were not wearing hair restraints while handling food.

When inspectors went back on Sept. 25, the same two violations were noted.

That’s when inspectors issued the warning letter.

During a second followup inspection on Sept. 29, both issues had been rectified.

Health inspectors also issued warning letters to the following food premise businesses for failing to renew their food handling licences on time - Acadian Fisherman’s Co-op Association Ltd. in Wellington, Baker’s Corner Express in Montague, Bloomfield Elementary School, Bulk Barn 517 in Summerside and O’Leary Elementary School.
