With winter on its way, one MLA wants to know if the province can give the public more information about snowplow locations.

During question period on Dec. 5, West Royalty-Springvale MLA Bush Dumville said in the past few years other provinces have started using GPS on snowplows to allow for real-time tracking online.

“This gives citizens a timeframe for when snowplows will be clearing and opening up roads around their homes and in their communities for safe travel,” he said.

Dumville directed his question to Transportation Minister Paula Biggar who said the province’s plows have GPS trackers on vehicles.

“It’s currently available for our department only,” she said.

Biggar also said private contractors do 40 per cent of the plowing on P.E.I. roads.

When those contracts come up in two years time the government would have to look at what the added costs and the logistics would be when it comes to GPS tracking, Biggar said.

“I know other provinces that do do it, actually by majority, (that) the roads are plowed by provincial equipment,” she said.
