SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. — An investigation is underway into a fire that caused heavy smoke and burn damage to a home on Northumberland Street at noon on Saturday.
“We got a call there was a house fire with possibly the resident inside, but nobody was home,” said Capt. Ron Enman of the Summerside Fire Department.
Six fire trucks were on site at the Summerside residence of 35 Northumberland St.
“The (firefighters) did a great job. The property needs some work, but the structure was a good save on our part."
Yvonne Sonier watched as smoke billowed from her neighbour’s home.
“My husband first noticed the flames coming out of the windows, and that was when the fire trucks were arriving on the scene. We didn’t know if our neighbour was at home at the time, but he’s not. We’re very close, and it’s frightening.”
Canadian Red Cross volunteers assisted the residents of the Northumberland home, a man and his teenaged grandson, both with emergency lodging, clothing and food purchases and some other essentials.
