CAPE EGMONT – An early afternoon fire on Wednesday destroyed a summer home in Cape Egmont.
Firefighters from the Wellington Fire Department were called to the Dosithie Gallant Road around 1:30 p.m. to a reported structure fire.
Desmond Arsenault, communications officer for the Wellington Fire Department, said the building was totally engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived.
Firefighters from Tyne Valley and Miscouche were also called to help fight the fire.
Arsenault said that high winds and dry grass made the situation even more hazardous for firefighters.
The grass was ignited and firefighters were concerned about another home across the street. Crews managed to contain the blaze to the summer home.
The home was owned by an off-Island couple who had just returned to Prince Edward Island to re-open the building for the summer but were not at home when the fire broke out.
Wellington firefighters were at the scene late Wednesday afternoon watering hot spots in the remains of the building.
There were no injuries reported from the blaze.
The provincial fire marshal’s office was at the scene Wednesday afternoon to try and determine a cause for the fire.
