KELVIN GROVE — An early morning fire destroyed a bungalow on the Blue Shank Road, near Kensington, Tuesday morning.

No people were injured, but the family cat was unaccounted for.

The Kensington Volunteer Fire Department responded to the call and were assisted by the New London Volunteer Fire Department.

Kensington deputy fire chief Rodney Hickey said the blaze is believed to have started in a bedroom and there are two suspected sources of ignition: a candle and an electric heater.

The provincial fire marhshall’s office was scheduled to inspect the home Tuesday to make a final determination on what caused the fire.

The home was insured and an inspector from the insurer was also scheduled to visit the site.

The structure itself was saved but it sustained significant smoke and water damage.

Hickey said at least three people live in the home. They are staying with family.

He also indicated that his crew and their colleagues from New London had the fire out in short order. The extreme cold afflicting P.E.I. Tuesday morning caused only minor inconveniences to the firefighter’s efforts.
