Like so many people out there former New York Rangers star Ron Duguay’s life has been touched by cancer.

So when the Sudbury native was asked to take part in the Face Off Against Cancer hockey tournament in Charlottetown this September he was happy to oblige.

P.E.I.’s Hockey Hall of Fame Dugay said he has lost a number of friends to cancer over the years including a very close friend and former roommate who died of brain cancer at the age of 40.

“I’ve had a good life, a lot of things have been given to me,” Dugay said. “ I’ve been trying to give back for the past 20 years...Cancer affects so many people on and off the ice. I am very proud to be part of this worthwhile event and support the great work of the Canadian Cancer Society. “

Dugay was one of six NHL legends announced Wednesday for the September charity tournament.

He will be joined by former Washington Capitals star Dennis Maruk, former Bruins Rick Middleton and Bob Sweeney, Stephane Richer, the last Montreal Canadian to score 50 goals in a single season and Al Iafrate, who played with Toronto, Washington, Boston and San Jose.

They will be joined by Island hockey celebrities Billy and Bobby MacMillan, Errol Thompson, Al MacAdam, Dave “Tucker” Flanagan, Billy McGuigan, Matt Boyle and Freddy MacDonald.

Additional players will be named to the celebrity line-up in the months to come.

Dugay said he’s looking forward to joining some of his former NHL friends on the ice and said they will play “as hard as they have to.’’

In its inaugural year last year Face Off Against Cancer raised $98,000.

Tournament committee spokesman Andrew Coady said Wednesday they hope to raise $125,000 this year.

Coady said seven teams from last year’s successful event have already signed on for September, including the overall winner, the MisFitz.

Only 16 teams will be accepted.

The team raising the most money for the cancer society will get first pick at the tournament’s draft event.

An early bird draw for a VIP luxury team package is available for teams registering online by May 31.
