Travis Eirfuane Mehmoodi was sentenced to serve three years, six months and 15 days in prison for four offences, including break, enter and theft and sexual interference.

In granting him day parole, the board imposed several conditions, including that Mehmoodi not consume drugs and that he avoid girls younger than 16.

Mehmoodi was convicted for breaking into the home where he stole a TV, a tablet computer and a videogame system.

While he was there, Mehmoodi went into the girl’s room, touched her sexually and threatened her with a knife.

The parole board said in its report Mehmoodi underwent a sex offender assessment after which a psychologist concluded his risk of sexual reoffending is high.

That psychologist also concluded Mehmoodi’s need for sexual offender treatment was moderate and his response to treatment was moderate.

Mehmoodi told the parole board he started using drugs at a young age while dealing with a break-up of his family and hanging out with negative associates.

He reported that he became a regular drug user, including ecstasy and later opiates.

Mehmoodi told the board he was remorseful for hurting the girl, speculated he had almost blacked out and said he couldn’t remember details of the incident.

He has never had interest in younger girls and would never cause that kind of hurt again, Mehmoodi said.

In reviewing his case, the board said it was mindful of public safety concerns and was satisfied if Mehmoodi returned to crime it would likely be preceded by a return to drug use.

During his release, Mehmoodi will be on the methadone program, and he must follow any substance abuse treatment plan his parole supervisor arranges for him.

Mehmoodi must also follow any psychological counselling arranged in relation to mental health issues and potential sexual deviancy.

While he is on day parole, Mehmoodi will live in a halfway house.
