CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. – Chief Coroner Dr. Desmond Colohan is announcing today that an inquest will be held in the death of Catherine Shirley Gillis.

Gillis, 69, died by suicide at Hillsborough Hospital on February 14, 2010.

The inquest will examine the events surrounding Ms. Gillis’ death to allow the jury to make recommendations aimed at preventing similar deaths, said the statement from the P.E.I. Department of Justice and Public Safety

Doctor Roy Montgomery will hear the inquest, which will not begin until next fall, 2017.

This follows on another inquest held earlier this year into a suicide death at the hospital in 2013.

Family of the woman in that case are wondering if a proper inquest had been held after the 2010 death, it might have led to recommendations the could have prevented the 2013 suicide. A family member spoke about this concern to the CBC in Charlottetown.
