A 49-year-old Charlottetown man whom police observed chasing another man down Euston Street with a baseball bat in his hands has been fined $30 in provincial court.

Leonard Scott Ryan, who was on probation at the time of that incident in 2014, had pleaded guilty to possession of a weapon for a purpose dangerous to the public peace.

Police were on routine patrol when they observed Ryan chasing the individual in question and ordered him to stop.

No reason was cited for Ryan’s actions.

The accused had prior convictions for both assault and assault causing bodily harm.

Ryan was sentenced to jail terms on two other matters.

He received 30 days for breach of probation.

That charge was laid when the accused failed to comply with a condition of probation requiring him to undergo assessment, counseling and treatment, if required, for the use of alcohol or drugs or any other underlying issue that may have contributed to the commission of a previous offence.

Chief Provincial Court Judge John Douglas said he viewed that as the most serious charge against Ryan.

Douglas sentenced him to another 15 days in jail, consecutive to the other sentence, for failing to attend court on a previous date.

Douglas suspended the passing of sentence on a charge of damage to property.

That charge was laid after Ryan kicked a window at a bus terminal during an argument with a female friend, shattering the window.

Douglas placed the accused on probation for 12 months and ordered him to pay restitution of $517.73 for the damaged window.

Ryan has also been ordered to follow through with the assessment, counseling and treatment order that he failed to comply with previously.
