Entrance to the P.E.I. National Park is free Saturday and special events are planned to celebrate Parks Day.
Brackley Beach is hosting a beach party consisting of yoga, beach volleyball, a surfguard competition and a sandcastle contest where visitors can win a family camping weekend in Prince Edward Island National Park. Other special activities and interpretative programs throughout the national park and national historic sites are also planned Sunday in honour of the 100th anniversary of the first national park.
Following are some of the activities planned at different locations of the P.E.I. National Park:
Brackley Beach
10- 11 a.m. - Yoga on the beach
12 noon - 2 p.m. – Beach volleyball: Work on your volleyball skills, get
tips from the pros or join in a game
1-4 p.m. - Sandcastle building contest: Join renowned Island artist and sand sculptor Maurice Bernard to build sandcastles in celebration of Parks Canada’s 100th birthday. Lots of prizes for different age groups and categories including top prize of a family camping weekend.
6:30 p.m. – Surfguard competition: Cheer on the surfguards as they practise
their skills and compete for top honours.
Stanhope Beach
8:30 p.m. - Bonfire and “Habitats are Homes” interpretive program: Join the
‘wild’ creatures of P.E.I. National Park as they share their fascinating tales
of adaptation among the habitats they call home. Be sure to bring a
flashlight and blanket!
Covehead
2 p.m. - Sturdy on stilts: Learn all about shorebirds at Covehead Lookout (1hour)
Cavendish
10:30 a.m. – Children age 6 to11 can become Parks Canada Xplorers at Cavendish Campground (1 hour)
2 p.m. – Historic games and races, Green Gables Heritage Place (1 hour)
2:30 p.m. - Mi’kmaq people, Cavendish Beach Complex (1 hour)
Greenwich
2:30 p.m. – Greenwich Dunes Walk. Meet at the Greenwich trailhead parking lot (2 hours)
11 a.m. – Children age 6 to11 can become Parks Canada Xplorers, Greenwich
Interpretive Centre (1 hour)
